Lots of adorable fun today at the Kidical Mass Ride in Santa Monica

Today I was a route leader at the Kidical Mass ride starting at John Adams Middle School in my home town of Santa Monica.  The kids and parents began to arrive at 9:30am.  There was a bike safety and repair check station staffed by bikerowave volunteers, a helmet decoration station and a nice, short and sweet presentation by Santa Monica City staff explaining the reason for the ride.  The event was paid for and organized by local Safe Routes to Schools staff from the city planning department and Alta Planning and design, a planning firm that I have been interning with here in Santa Monica.  We gathered together the 100+ group of kids and parents, discussed safe group riding skills and took off on a circular route that took us along great biking corridors such as Pearl street and through Clover field park.  Along the way route leaders helped the group practice safe stopping and signaling and pointed out route connections to local schools and attractions.  All in all the ride was very well attended and very safe.  Santa Monica sets the bar high with events like this that are designed to promote safe biking to school and empower students and parents to overcome fears and gain the confidence needed to make alternative transportation a normal part of getting to and from school on a daily basis.
